Honor God With Your Bodies
The Flame Newsletter February 2012

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Last month I shared with the congregation that we must be reminded that our bodies are God’s temples. I made the statement that we must be cautious of what goes in and out of our bodies. The things we say and do must be pleasing to God. The things we eat and drink must also be pleasing to God. I shared that many of us have become addicts to nicotine caffeine and everything in between. One way that we can honor God with our bodies is by fasting. Every year, during the month of January, my family and I practice the Daniel Fast. It is my desire that we as a congregation participate together as one church body in a Daniel Fast. Holy week this year is April 1-7. Easter Sunday is April 8. Holy week is about the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus accomplished for each of us. He sacrificed his own life. I believe that we should be able to make a sacrifice as well during Holy Week. This means for us as a congregation the Daniel Fast will last 7 days, April 1-7, 2012.

Welcome to Burns

Burns Memorial United Methodist Church

If you're looking for a group of friendly, caring, and committed Christian people, then you'll find them here at Burns Church. We believe that everybody needs Jesus Christ, and we also believe that everyone needs to be part of His Church.

We celebrate our life together in Christ through worship on Sunday mornings and evenings. We have a variety of groups and classes for children, youth, and adults that help us grow in our faith and build lifelong relationships with God and other people.

Burns Church was formed in 1945 as the Augusta area population was growing and there was need for more neighborhood churches. Since that time the people of Burns have been a faithful and fruitful part of the Augusta Community. We have reached far beyond our own city to share the love of Christ through mission teams in places such as Haiti, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

We are part of the Wesleyan tradition that began so long ago, and continues in the power of God's Holy Spirit, to make disciples of Jesus Christ around the world. God's Spirit binds us together with other United Methodist Churches, with churches of the Wesleyan tradition, and with all Christians of Christ's universal Church. We believe we are called to work side by side with all Christians as we witness to our faith in Christ Jesus.

We'd love to talk with you about your place in the ministry of God, and how you too might become part of what God is doing here in Burns Church. We're glad to have you visit us here and hope you'll visit at our church home on Lumpkin Road in South Augusta. God be with you till we meet again!
